What is a face oil?

A face oil is an oil-based skincare product that can soften, condition and soothe your skin.

A simple face oil may be composed of a single plant carrier oil, whereas a more complex face oil may contain several plant carrier oils, as well as extracts, actives and essential oils.

There are face oils that are created for different skin types and concerns, including dry skin, mature skin, sensitive skin or acne prone skin.

Why do you need a face oil?

Why do you need a face oil?

As you age, your skin changes and you become more at risk for dry skin.

Your skin barrier becomes weaker and your skin makes less lipids, fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants.

As you age, your skin has lower levels of vitamin C (Rhie et al, 2001).

Furthermore, as you age, your skin makes less:

    • fatty acids including:
      • linoleic acid (n-6)
      • palmitic acid
      • stearic acid
    • vitamin E

Vitamin C for skin

Why do you need vitamin C?

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant.

Normal skin contains high concentrations of vitamin C.

The vitamin C content of skin has been measured in several studies, with the epidermis - the most outer layer of skin, containing 6 - 64 mg vitamin C per 100 g tissue and the dermis layer of skin containing 3 - 13 mg vitamin C per 100 g tissue (reviewed by Pullar et al, 2017).

However, as you age, your skin has lower levels of vitamin C.

Exposure to sunlight and UV irradiation as well as smoking can deplete vitamin C levels in your skin.

Several studies have shown that vitamin C levels are lower in aged or photodamaged skin (Shindo et al, 1994; Rhie et al, 2001; McArdle et al, 2002).

For instance, researchers measured the amount of vitamin C in sun-exposed forearms and sun-protected upper-inner arms in young (average 21.0 years old) and older (average 76.1 years old) people. The vitamin C levels of photoaged skin were 63 - 69% of the levels of young skin, and the vitamin C levels of the naturally aged skin were 61 - 70% of the levels of young skin. Thus, it is suggested that both photoaging and natural aging can lower vitamin C levels in the skin (Rhie et al, 2001).

Whether this association reflects cause or effect is unknown, but studies show that excessive exposure to oxidant stress via pollutants or UV irradiation is associated with depleted vitamin C levels in the skin (Shindo et al, 1993; Shindo et al, 1994).

tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate has benefits for your skin

Why do you need tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate?

Have you been wanting to try vitamin C, but your dry skin gets irritated with ascorbic acid?

Dry Skin Love Nourishing Coconut 5% Vitamin C Face Oil is made with a gentle vitamin C ester called tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate.

Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate is a gentle and effective vitamin C ester that is also known as ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate and tetra-isopalmitoyl ascorbate.

Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate is gentle and has inherent emollient properties, which means it can help moisturize and nourish the skin. It aids in replenishing lost moisture and contributes to the hydration of dry skin.

Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate has clinically been shown to improve skin texture, brighten skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate is generally well-tolerated by various skin types, including dry and sensitive skin.
